BusinessBeing able to interpret data, and making sure to look withingenetics, time periods, andhealth status gives a moreaccurate picture of potentialcauses and focus areas forimprovement. Trying to comparegroups with different healthstatuses can lead to incorrectconclusions.Additionally, you haveto make sure that you haveenough data to 昀椀gure out ifthe difference is ‘real’ or justchance. Sometimes numericaldifferences are still economicallyimportant, but that is where youneed a full picture of the databeing analyzed before drawingconclusions. For example, if you lookedat the data below, I’m sure youwould choose Sire Line A, butthis doesn’t tell you if Sire Line Bsuffered from more downstreamPRRS breaks. With our FarmStats database,we have enough pigs andgroups (3.7 million pigs in2023) to allow for some reallyrobust data analysis. But,for that next level of insight, and to determine if numericaldifferences are valid, we needto make sure we have a goodperspective of the system beinganalyzed. Are barns stocked at thesame densities? Do they havethe same feeder type? Are theyfed different levels of fat orenergy? Without that additionalinformation, we cannot providethe additional insight that canhelp take your operation to thenext level.I encourage you to haveconversations with anyconsultant you are working withand share as much as possibleabout your operation. More datacan lead to more information tohelp you make better informeddecisions. With current marketconditions, maintaining yourperspective, and making smarteconomic decisions are moreimportant than ever.WINTER 2024 | 11
