DAY 3 TOKYO
Welcome to the Tokyo International Great
Quilt Festival! Enter the Tokyo Dome, and
get ready for rows of dazzling booths piled
high with Japanese prints, luscious antique
kimono fabrics, kits, patterns, books and
one-of-a-kind designer prints. B
Kinkaku-ji, Kyoto
DAY 4 TOKYO – LAKE KAWAGUCHI
This morning, visit Itchiku Kubota Museum,
a stunning museum devoted to Kubota
Itchiku, famous for reviving a silk dyeing technique used in decorating historic kimonos.
Harmoniously blending into its surroundings,
the museum stands in the wooded hills
along the northern coast of Lake Kawaguchi.
Exhibited are several of the artist’s kimono
creations, depicting themes of nature, the
cosmos and the seasons. Catch a glimpse of
the incredible Mount Fuji before departing
back to Tokyo.

DAY 5 TOKYO
Return to the quilt show or explore Tokyo
to discover its cuisine, arts and fascinating
culture. Midday, we visit the seven-story
Yuzawaya Kamata store where you’ll find
supplies for every conceivable needle art,
including Japanese fabrics, indigo-dyed
panels, sashiko thread and patterns,
embellishments, beads, buttons, ribbons
and patterns. B
DAY 6 TOKYO – KYOTO
The Shinkansen “bullet train” speeds us
through spectacular scenery to Kyoto,
epicenter of Japan’s rich artistic heritage.
We’ll visit the Kinkaku-ji (Golden Pavilion),
a glimmering legacy of medieval Japan, entirely
sheathed in gold leaf. Later, we’ll visit Nijo
Castle, built in 1543 for a shogun warrior. It’s
famous for ornate rooms and “nightingale”
floors that squeak to warn of intruders. B D
DAY 7 KYOTO
Watch artisans work at Kyoto’s Museum of
Traditional Crafts where exhibits demonstrate techniques and examples of fabric
dyeing, woodblock prints, washi papermaking,
decorative stitching, fans, parasols, ceramics,
dolls, wood inlay and masks. This afternoon,
enjoy leisure time to explore the winding alleys
of endless boutiques and Japanese eateries. B
DAY 8 KYOTO
Visit the charming Kyoto Kaleidoscope
Museum. Experience the spectacular array
of patterns, designs and colors of the
kaleidoscopes on display. Let those kaleidoscopes give you inspiration when creating
your own. Later, we’ll guide you through
Kyoto’s oldest market arcade, a maze
of covered walkways where locals shop
for bargains in hundreds of small shops.
Discover one that specializes in fine sewing
needles and beautiful handmade wooden
sewing boxes, and others that specialize in
Japanese fabrics. B
DAY 9 KYOTO
Attend a shibori workshop to learn the
art of wrapping fabric with thread, one of
Japan’s oldest, now-dying textile arts Then
we’ll learn Japanese stenciling at Kyo-Yuzen
Dyeing Gallery. It’s stenciling, but with a twist!
Compare results later while saying sayonara to
newfound friends at our Farewell Dinner and
Geisha show. B D
DAY 10 KYOTO – OSAKA – TOUR ENDS
Enjoy a relaxing breakfast with new friends
before boarding our motor coach for our
departure transport to the airport. B
