National News Literacy Week
National News Literacy Week, an annual event
that debuted in January 2020, is presented
by NLP in partnership with The E.W. Scripps
Company. The week is designed to:
•
Raise awareness among general audiences,
educators and students that news literacy is a
basic life skill central to a healthy democracy.
•
Cultivate an understanding of the First Amendment
and the role of journalism in our democracy.
•
Equip everyone with easy-to-adopt tools
and tips for becoming news-literate.
•
Provide educators with free resources
to use with their students.
•
Strengthen news consumers’ trust in journalism by
reinforcing the role of quality journalism in a democracy.
National News Literacy Week will take
place Jan. 22-26, 2024, and will offer a
variety of ways for educators and students
to get involved, virtually or in person.
News Literacy Change-Makers
Every June, as part of our News Literacy Change-Makers
celebration, we select the Alan C. Miller Educator of the
Year, which recognizes the outstanding achievements of
classroom teachers, librarians or other educators who have
distinguished themselves in their commitment to news literacy.
The celebration also honors the John S. Carroll Journalist
of the Year and the Gwen I昀椀ll Student of the Year.
