Commercial Reverse Osmosis Membranes
Commercial Membranes
The reverse osmosis membrane is a thin layer that does not let certain ions permeate through it. Due to its
ability to remove ions from solutions, it is mainly used to remove salt from aqueous solutions. Before the
1990’s, cellulose acetate was used as the membrane material but was replaced by a polyamide compound
because it offered higher salt rejection and lower energy costs. Because of its ability to remove dissolved
ions in a solution without phase inversion, it is used to remove salt and TDS in water.
From converting seawater into fresh water, production of ultra pure water for washing electronic parts and
medical and pharmaceutical purposes, use in the food and beverage industries, to recycling of waste water
and sewage, the applications of RO membranes are truly diverse.
LOW PRESSURE MEMBRANES
Low Pressure RO Membranes, yield the same performance rates as regular RO membranes but require only
two-thirds of the pressure. Therefore, RO systems installed with these membrane elements require far less
in energy and relevant costs (such as part costs because the system can be simplified). Main applications
are for treating brackish water.

BRACKISH WATER MEMBRANES
Reverse Osmosis
Brackish water RO membranes are especially more effective when the feed water is within 10,000 ppm of
concentration. Because of its high performance rate and chemical resistance, it can be used for a variety of
purposes.

The biggest problem with using RO membranes can be contamination (or fouling) of the membrane
layer. Especially in the case where surface water or wastewater contains highly-concentrated organic
substances, the membrane may bear irreparable damage.
