Calcite, Soda Ash
Calcite
Acidic waters on contact with Calcite slowly dissolve the calcium
carbonate media to raise the pH which reduces the potential
leaching of copper, lead and other metals found in typical
plumbing systems. Periodic back-washing will prevent packing
and maintain high service rates. Depending on pH and service
flow, the Calcite bed will have to be periodically added to as the
dissolved calcite depletes.
As the Calcite’s calcium carbonate neutralizes the water, it will
increase hardness and a softener may become necessary after the
neutralizing filter.

Soda Ash
Soda Ash injection is used if water is acidic (low pH). Soda ash
(sodium carbonate) raises the pH of water to near neutral when
injected into a water system. Unlike neutralizing filters, they do not
cause hardness problems in treated water. A corrosion-resistant
chemical feed pump should be used to inject a soda ash solution
into the water.
If the water needs to be disinfected as well as neutralized, dual
treatment is possible within the injection system by adding a
chlorine solution (sodium

The solubility of soda ash is dependent on temperature. The
following chart shows how much will stay in solution without
forming a precipitate in the solution tank, injector line and chemical

About 3 pounds of soda ash to 4 or 5 gallons of water is the
strongest solution that should be attempted. Soda ash has a
tendency to stop up feeder lines and check valves associated
with the chemical feed pump. Problems can be minimized by
keeping the solution mixture as weak as possible to get the pH
adjustment needed.

When injected into a water system with a chemical feed pump, soda ash will neutralize acid water
and eliminate corrosion problems. Also used as a cleaner for Tannin type water softeners.
