Hollings IN BRIEF
New Innovator
Joe Delaney, Ph.D., is one of 72 recipients of the NIH
director’s New Innovator Award, which funds unusually
creative early-stage investigators. The grant provides
$453,000 annually for up to five years, which Delaney will
use to investigate aneuploidy in ovarian cancer. ◗
Total Skin Electron Beam
About eight out of every million people will be diagnosed with
cutaneous T-cell lymphoma. It's an extraordinarily rare type
of non-Hodgkin lymphoma and, until now, South Carolinians
seeking a treatment known as total skin electron beam therapy
had to leave the state to find it.
Because of the intense demands placed on the physicist team
and the small number of patients who need the treatment, few
cancer centers offer it. Now, patients can get this treatment
at Hollings.
“I think that's one of the important things to look at — when
working at an NCI-designated cancer center in an academic
institution like this, we can focus on patients who have
conditions that may be a little more rare, and we can dedicate
the resources to treat just a few patients instead of only
focusing on cancers that affect the majority of the people,”
said lead physicist Alek Rapchak. ◗

SRNT Recognition
Hollings has a strong nicotine and tobacco research program,
which is evident by how the Society for Research on Nicotine
and Tobacco has recognized our members.
K. Michael Cummings, Ph.D. (above), was honored this spring
with the group’s Doll-Wynder Award, which it awards every three
years to someone who has done groundbreaking work in public
health, public policy or epidemiological research.
Benjamin Toll, Ph.D., was elected to the position of presidentelect of the group. He will be in a leadership role for three years,
moving to the president position next year. ◗
