MUSC Wellness Center Physical Therapy for Cancer
SURVIVORS’ FIT CLUB
Gaining Momentum After Cancer
ancer and cancer treatment will do a number
on your body. So you may not feel like
getting up and exercising — but movement
can really help.
C
That’s why Hollings partners with the MUSC
Wellness Center on two programs designed
especially for cancer survivors — the Survivors’
Fit Club for breast cancer survivors and the newly
launched Strength Camp for prostate cancer
survivors.
It’s also why Hollings has invested in oncologyfocused physical therapy.
A cancer focus means offering exercises to target
neuropathy — nerve damage that can feel like
anything from numbness to sharp pain. Other
exercises help with balance, which can be thrown off
by cancer treatment.
The Survivors’ Fit Club and Strength Camp offer
small group classes that target fatigue, cardiovascular
fitness, nutrition, muscle strength and quality of life,
all in supportive groups of other cancer survivors.
A recently added water component even has
members of the Survivors’ Fit Club calling
themselves “The Mermaids”!
When I came here, I had no
balance. Even when we started
out with the machines, I was a
little leery of doing the exercises
because of my balance. But after
the swimming lessons... I have no
problem with balance. I can walk up
the steps now without having
to hold onto the railing.
