Q
Who is considered one of the founding
mothers of The National Center for
Civil and Human Rights?
A
Dr. Evelyn Gibson Lowery.
Bonus Trivia: Dr. Lowery, along other Civil Rights activists,
desired a museum that honored the legacy of the American
Civil Rights Movement and helped shape the center’s foundation.
Her work as a civil rights activist, alongside her husband,
Rev. Joseph Lowery, was often overlooked like so many women of
the movement, though she actively participated in boycotts,
marches, and other protests, including Selma in 1965.

Q
Who was one of the first two English women to
arrive in Virginia, just a year after Jamestown
was founded in 1607?
A
Anne Burras-Laydon.
Bonus Trivia: Burras-Laydon was only 14 years old when she
arrived in Jamestown. She survived significant events, including
the starving time and martial law, and periods of warfare with
the Indigenous tribes whose land was being invaded. In 1616,
she was declared an ancient planter and given land as a reward
for helping make sure the colony succeeded.
