Q
Did labor unions ever team up with
the Civil Rights Movement?
A
In the 1960s, Jimmy Hoffa was president of the International
Brotherhood of Teamsters, a union of workers. Hoffa and
the Teamsters championed the work of Martin Luther King Jr.,
mostly providing financial support to amplify the movement.
Bonus Trivia: When Hoffa received a 13-year prison sentence for
bribery and jury tampering, he wrote to Dr. King for support.
Dr. King’s response letter suggested that Hoffa reflect on his choices:
“dig deep into your tremendous wellspring of energy and continue
your contribution to America even if it must come behind bars.”
