Most reasons are valid. After all, you likely had something
going on in your life that prevented you from taking
care of your tax responsibilities.
Maybe you were sick … you had a death in the family …
or you had an unexpected expense. Maybe you received
bad tax advice from a tax professional. Whatever the
case, explain your situation so it proves you were going
through challenging times.
Then send this request via a letter to your local IRS
office. Add in any extra documentation that supports
your situation too.
If you don’t hear back within a few months, send another
letter that states the date you mailed your original
request and explains you’re still waiting for a response.
Also, include your original letter.
You should then get a response. If your request is denied,
you can file an appeal. In fact, you can often have more
success when filing an appeal. So stay persistent. You
can save yourself lots of money.
