Expanding After
School Programs at
Discovery Club
Congratulating Betty Lehrman
on 15 Years of Extraordinary
Leadership
After 15 years of serving as Camp
Kaleidoscope’s Director, Betty Lehrman
will be retiring at the end of 2023. Her
background in educational theater and her
experience as a performer was a driving
force for developing Kaleidoscope’s theater
programs in addition to visual arts. Betty’s
journey to the JCC was entirely serendipitous.
One winter, when Betty was skiing with her
family in Vermont, her husband struck up a
conversation with another family over lunch
and learned that the JCC was hiring a director
for its arts camp. Within two days, Betty was
at the JCC interviewing for the job — and the
rest is history!
For most parents, keeping their kids engaged and safe after
school hours is a common concern. At JCC Greater Boston’s
Discovery Club, kids are able to nourish their hearts and minds
through a spirit of play, rooted in Jewish values. The Discovery
Club’s menu of STEAM-based activities — from building robots
to creating clay sculptures to joining the “Pokemon Club” —
gives kids the flexibility to choose activities that align with their
interests. There’s truly something for everyone. And thanks to a
newly refurbished classroom space, Discovery Club is now able to
serve more kids per day and expand its programmatic offerings.
Additionally, we’ve been able to increase tuition assistance by
40%, which has enabled Discovery Club
to become financially accessible to
families who otherwise wouldn’t
be able to participate.
Every day at camp, there is performance
time in which anyone can get up in front of
the whole camp to sing a song, tell a joke, or
share a story. It’s a lovely tradition of camp
that Betty introduced, and is core to the
culture of Kaleidoscope. We are enormously
grateful to Betty for her leadership,
creativity, and dedication to Kaleidoscope,
and we wish her many fulfilling adventures
to come!
