McGruff
Chestnut + Simba
Chestnut, a stray, found his way to us
in July of 2023. Upon arrival, Chestnut
appeared a bit worse for wear, but
fortunately, his injuries were mostly
super昀椀cial. Our dedicated shelter
medicine team immediately set to
work, tending to his wounds and
working tirelessly to help him both
feel and look better.
In addition to his physical care,
Chestnut was also tested for Feline
Immunode昀椀ciency Virus. FIV is spread
primarily through 昀椀ghting and bite
wounds. Many cats who test positive
for FIV go on to live full lives without
any symptoms of the disease but
may be at risk for developing immune
de昀椀ciencies later in life.
The health and lifespan of a cat with
FIV depend so much on maintaining
a strong immune system, so there
are some things you can do to stack
the odds, including keeping your cat
indoors, scheduling regular wellness
checkups and feeding a high-nutrition
diet. We had another FIV-positive cat
in the shelter who was in need of a
companion, and that’s when Chestnut
came into the picture.
Chestnut and Simba, both sporting
their vibrant orange coats, were
introduced and shared living quarters.
Over time, these two feline friends
formed a strong bond, and we were
delighted to see them adopted
together into their forever home!

McGru昀昀 spent several months in
di昀昀erent animal shelters before he
came to HSSC. When he arrived, he
was recovering from a fracture in his
right front leg. Our shelter medical
team initially placed him on temporary
exercise restriction to allow his leg
to heal. However, McGru昀昀 was not
one to let anything slow him down!
He had a very hard time settling for
less activity and his leg was not going
to heal. After careful consideration, it
was decided the best course of action
for McGru昀昀’s longterm wellbeing
would be to amputate that leg. He
underwent the procedure and healed
remarkably well, continuing to be a
happy and energetic young dog while
eagerly awaiting his new family.
HAPPY
Of course, life on three legs hasn’t
slowed McGru昀昀 down one bit! For
such a peppy pup, we knew it would
take someone with an athletic lifestyle
to help him live life to the fullest. We
are pleased to report that McGru昀昀
has found that active adopter! He did
not walk, but rather ran out of the
shelter with his new best friend, eager
to become the dog he was born to be!
Oreo + Tiramisu
This lovely family came in saying that
they’ve never had guinea pigs, but
they had spent a lot of time researching
all about them and becoming as cavy
savvy as possible. Now they were
ready to adopt! They immediately
fell in love with the super sweet pair,
Oreo and Tiramisu. The kids saved up
as much money as they could to pay
for the food, supplies and adoption
fees. They were so excited to start
their journey with their new piggies,
they could barely contain it. We are
thrilled that Oreo and Tiramisu landed
in such a wonderful, caring home!
