Steven P. Lufburrow | President & CEO
As I look back on 2020, I am pleased with the success achieved by our dedicated teams and
our Goodwill Boards. While the year was dominated by the threat of COVID-19, Goodwill
Houston reinvented itself to meet the needs of our community. The Board of Directors donated
their time and expertise to ensure we had what we needed to be successful. Thank you to
my dedicated team for the days and nights they worked to keep our mission on track.
At the mandate of our state and local officials, Goodwill Houston was fully closed for seven
weeks in the spring. While we stayed apart for safety, we were in constant communication,
by phone and video conference. Our teams put out video messages, generated newsletters,
and found new ways to reach not only our Boards and employees, but also mission program
participants.
We refocused our retail teams and strategized the best ways to institute social distancing
and protective equipment to allow our employees, shoppers, and donors to interact safely.
We reinvented mission services delivery methods and sped up the development of our online
tools. Today, we are operating our mission service programs virtually with a digital platform
that has become a leader in the Goodwill community.
Thanks to our dedicated teams, Goodwill Houston has grown closer together while staying
apart. We have strengthened the bonds beyond our physical presence and developed new
strategies to continue leading the way in changing lives through the power of work for the
workforce needs of today and tomorrow.
Thank you for your support.
Craig W. Nunez | Chairman of the Board
Nothing could have adequately prepared me for the COVID-19 challenges Goodwill faced
during my first year as your Chairman. But fortunately for all of us, I was able to lean on a
team of nearly two thousand outstanding Goodwill professionals who were able to overcome
every obstacle the virus put in their way. In fact, I believe 2020 will go down in history as
one of Goodwill Houston’s finest hours. Our team responded quickly, professionally, and
compassionately to fulfill its mission and navigate the unprecedented challenges caused by
the virus. Goodwill Houston reaffirmed its position as a leader in the global Goodwill movement
and served as a model for non-profit and for-profit organizations across the country to follow.
And all of this was accomplished while applying 95% of every dollar to mission services and
ending the year debt-free.
On behalf of the entire Goodwill family, I want to thank you for your support of this great
organization.
Regards,
