Barrel in Barrel Kiln
I needed more waste residues to fuel the
kiln and reach the desired temperature for a
longer amount of time. At the same time, the
process allowed a clean and safe burn without
compromising the quality of biochar.
Barrel size 55gallon 89x 59cm
Barrel-in-barrel technique inside barrel capacity
Load of material about half a cubic meter to
get the rough volume of …
The temperature reaches between 300-500
degrees.
Length of complete burn around four hours (
slow burn )
Because the barrel is closed, no/little oxygen
keeps the fuel going, which leads to three
burns in which the fuel 昀椀re is killed due to the
lack of oxygen in the external barrel and eventual moisture in the material.
This barrel-in-barrel technique works well. I
need a very clean and higher quality biochar,
but also only if I have enough fuel.
The stacking technique is different, and I tried
it out because of the failures of past burns
when the fuel was not lit and heating enough.
