El Prat de Llobregat is situated near Barcelona’s airport and is part of Barcelona’s metropolitan area. This
area is known for its industrial activities and being
close to natural spaces such as the Llobregat Delta, a
critical ecological zone.
With the expansion of Barcelona and the development
of the nearby airport, El Prat experienced signi昀椀cant
industrial growth in the 20th century, leading to a mix
of industrial and agricultural land use.
With that increasing pressure, there has also been a
signi昀椀cant rise in peri-urban permacultural practices.
Due to the natural conditions of the Llobregat Delta,
the area already has a history for agricultural purposes, serving as farmland supplying the nearby city of
Barcelona with fresh produce.
Permaculture in Cal Negre would focus on sustainable, regenerative agricultural practices harmonising
with the local ecosystem. This includes crop rotation,
composting, and using natural fertilisers. El Prat is
particularly famous for its artichokes, speci昀椀cally the
variety known as “Carxofa Prat” or “Prat Artichoke”.

Another reason for El Prats’s history of agriculture is
the speci昀椀c nutrient-rich soil conditions.
Because of sediment deposits from the river Llobregat,
most soil is high in organic matter, alluvial and loamy.
It is ideal for drainage and moisture retention, which
are advantages for growing a wide range of crops
year-round.
El Prat and Llobregat Delta have diverse ecosystems,
including wetlands, reed beds, and coastal dunes.
The delicate equilibrium between agriculture and
conservation in the region is a pivotal aspect, underscoring the importance of my project in El Prat and
Llobregat Delta.
