Biocharged is an ongoing
Material
Research
Project
with a focus on Biochar as a
regenerative
and
bioremediating
material.
It is a carbon-capturing material that transforms
organic waste into Biochar through pyrolysis.
This BIOCHAR is then inoculated with an abundant nutrient-rich human waste, URINE.
The porous structure and inert nature of biochar
enable it to function like a battery, storing or
releasing Nutrients from urine as needed by the
environment. Biocharged fosters a symbiotic relationship between organic and inorganic materials.
It combines the advantages of two materials which
are culturally seen as waste but very appreciated
by the environment when done right.

Sculpting Medium
At this stage of the Project, Biocharged can act as a
sculptural, expressive medium while being a circular,
sustainable, and zero km material.
Creating and making are key human activities connecting us with ourselves and our environment.
Working with a material like Biocharged, it feels like
a symbiosis of human and non-human activity as the
making will result in something that gives back more
than it takes.
It is humbling. It is grounding. It slows down.
It stores energy. It enables connection.
