--Other Board Opportunities (Non-Disability Specific)
As noted above, sharing your voice and perspective as someone with an intellectual and developmental
disability, or as a family member, is important in all areas of life. This includes those areas which are not
disability specific. There may be board leadership and advocacy opportunities through nonprofits in a
variety of interest areas. This means that you may find a board that focuses on interests, hobbies, and
other issue areas important to you.
There are tens of thousands of nonprofit organizations to choose from across the state of Florida. Some
examples, include: the American Heart Association, the Florida Museum of Natural History, the Society
for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), Salvation Army, Florida Humanities, Sea Turtle
Conservancy, Habitat for Humanity, and many more. It is important to consider opportunities which are
not always disability specific so that unique perspectives are able to be heard in all areas of community
life. To find out how you can become involved in a nonprofit organization in your community, you may
contact the organization directly to learn more about their individual process.
There may be faith-based organization board opportunities, as well as homeowner association (HOA)
boards, which also offer options to share a disability perspective through advocacy and leadership in
one’s home community.
Non-disability specific national boards also offer an opportunity to share a disability perspective in other
areas of life which can be an impactful means of advocacy and leadership as well.
