Another objective of the study is to examine the innovation intensity of firms operating in the BIST manufacturing
sector. The data on the innovation intensity of the firms are given in Table 3. The table shows 104 firms (54.17%)
have innovation intensity less than 0.0001. This is because the expenses incurred for research and development
activities in these firms are zero or very low. As can be seen in Table 3, only 13 firms (6.77%) have research and
development expenditures between 0.01 and 0.1. It is seen that the innovation intensity, which is extremely
important for firms to maintain their competitive activities, is relatively low.
