In 1897, WB Close paid £10,000 to the US government for the right
to build a railway from Skagway on the Pacific coast of Alaska
into the Yukon. The route began in Skagway and it was here, in
the Spring of 1898, that Canadian surveyor Mike Heney, engineers
Sir Thomas Tankrede, EC Hawkins and Samuel Graves, the head
of Close Brothers, came up with the route for the railway.
