CANTWELL
Cantwell, or Yidateni Na’ in Ahtna Athabascan, is a
recreationist treasure in the heart of the Last Frontier,
offering tourists a unique and unforgettable experience.
Surrounded by Denali National Park and the stunning
Alaska Range, Cantwell is a gateway to pristine
wilderness and adventure.
The town is at the north end of Broad Pass and the
western end of the Denali Highway, both known for
spectacular scenery. Tanana Athabascan Natives were
the original inhabitants of the Cantwell area. They
hunted and fished these lands as part of their broad
range in Interior Alaska. Today, much of this land is
owned by Ahtna, Inc. (as well as land along the Denali
Hwy.), which is a regional Native Corporation. Learn
more about their people, cultures and land use permits
at www.ahtna.com.
For nature enthusiasts, Cantwell boasts unparalleled
opportunities for hiking, wildlife viewing, and
photography. This area is a paradise for outdoor
activities year-round. In the summer, explore the many
hiking trails that traverse tundra. In the winter, embrace
the wonder of a snow-covered landscape while crosscountry skiing or snowmobiling. And, for a truly Alaskan
adventure, try dog sledding with local mushers - any time
of year!
