THE GENDER PINT GAP: REVISITED/BARRIERS
2023: The way beer is presented and served is not ‘female friendly’
As a reminder, the 2018 data set showed
26% of women found the volume of liquid,
and the glassware used for beer was a
barrier to them drinking beer.
2023 insights
52% of the women who responded to
this question strongly agreed or tended
to agree that the way beer is served and
presented was a barrier to them
choosing beer as a drink of choice.
It is especially problematical for women
in the 25 to 34 age group (58% agreed or
tended to agree).
40% of male respondents also identified
glassware and serve as a barrier to
women choosing, and drinking, beer.
“I like the idea of a “cocktail menu” style beer menu available on tables and at the bar. Looking
at a sea of founts and/or tap wall and frankly looking a bit silly trying to figure out what it is
based on a name and ABV isn’t very appealing. On a cocktail menu I will look at what is
included in a cocktail and pick out ingredients or flavours I know I like (or more importantly
something I don’t like). Beer menus aren’t the best at describing the flavour; even at the big
beer festivals there are a lot of the hop varieties mentioned or beer described as “hoppy”
which isn’t very helpful.”
