Image is everything, and how we judge!
We identified in the 2018 Gender Pint Gap that 17% of women said
they don’t choose beer in case they are judged by others for doing so.
Insight: Gendered Stigma
In a 2023 article for Metro newspaper, the journalist and beer writer
Emmie Harrison-West wrote about this type of stigmatisation:
“I love beer. I review beers online; I’m a beer writer for the esteemed
British Guild of Beer Writers, a member of the Campaign for Real Ale
group, and a regular attendee at beer festivals. It’s a big part of my life,
and I’m often pictured with a pint in hand.
“Yet, I can’t help but notice the slightly raised eyebrows 3 from both
men and women 3 when I order a second pint, or the intonation of
surprise when I tell people about my job. I’ve been told by shocked men
that I can ‘really put my beer away’, while women of all ages have
looked at me scornfully.
These judgmental opinions and perceptions were examined more closely in
Darwin’s previously cited study, Omnivorous Masculinity: Gender Capital and
Cultural Legitimacy in Craft Beer Culture.
96 people across all genders were interviewed in US beer bars and asked for their definition
of 8masculine9 and 8feminine9 beer descriptors.
