In order to receive compensation while absent on sick leave, for any of the
reasons above, the employee shall notify their immediate supervisor or the city
manager, prior to the time set for beginning their daily duties, or as may be
specified by the department head. The department head may request a
physician’s statement or a personal affidavit stating the cause of the absence.
The following shall apply as pertains to the accumulation of sick time, which is in
conjunction with the accident and sickness (disability) insurance program
adopted by the City:
i. Sick time may be taken in one-hour increments.
ii. Sick time shall be earned by full-time employees at the rate of
one workday for each calendar month of service. Unused sick
time shall accrue and may be accumulated to a total of not
more than 34 days, provided that the total shall be reduced
each July 1 to not more than 22 days.
iii. Each full-time employee with at least five years of continuous
service who terminates employment with the City by reason
of death, resignation or retirement shall be paid for 100
percent of their accumulated unused sick time to a maximum
of 34 days.
iv. In order to reward employees who, continue to show good
work attendance after their 34 day maximum sick time
accumulation is reached, the following shall apply:
1. Each employee shall be paid at their straight time rate
for 100 percent of the sick time accumulated in excess
of 22 days, up to and including 34 days, as of June 30
of each year. Payment shall typically be made on the
last pay day in June.
v. In no case shall a City employee who has been discharged be
entitled to pay for accumulated unused sick time.
vi. An employee on a non-work-related disability leave shall not
accumulate additional sick time for the period of their
disability.
Departmental Leave Policies
Individual departments may provide further guidance related to various leave types including but
not limited to vacation, personal, PTO, etc. that meet the needs of the department. This can
include items such as vacation selection procedures, blackout periods, coordination with bargaining
groups, etc.
Educational Allowance:
The City agrees to provide up to $1,500 education allowance per fiscal year to be used for
educational purposes leading towards an Associate’s, Bachelor’s or Master’s degree including
standalone courses work in the field related to their current position in the organization. In
addition, EMT courses provided by Emergent Health will also be allowed should the employee also
