APPENDIX K:
WEAPONS AND VIOLENCE POLICY
With the exception of law enforcement, employees are prohibited from bringing weapons to the
workplace, including in vehicles in parking lots, regardless of whether the person is licensed to
carry a weapon or not. Weapons also must not be in an employee’s possession while on City time
or when traveling on business.
This policy applies to all employees with the exception of law enforcement officers. This policy also
prohibits weapons at any work-sponsored functions, such as parties or picnics.
Prohibited weapons include all types of firearms, knives, explosives, chemical sprays, or other
dangerous devices. If you have a question about whether an item is covered by this policy, please
contact the city manager or human resources director.
You are responsible for making sure that you are not in violation of this policy. Failure to abide by
this Policy may result in discipline, up to and including termination. Furthermore, carrying a
weapon in violation of this policy may be considered an act of criminal trespass and will be grounds
for immediate removal from the property and/or may result in criminal prosecution.
If you become aware of anyone violating this policy, you must report it immediately to the city
manager or human resources director.
Also, if you have any reason to believe that an employee (or any other individual associated with
the City or that is on City property) has made threats of violence or may become violent you must
immediately report this to the city manager or human resources director, and, if appropriate, to
the police. Unfortunately, workplace violence is all too common and any potential threat must be
reported if the violence is to be prevented.
