Honoring Our
First Peoples
Charles County was first inhabited by Algonquin-speaking
Indigenous Peoples, including the state-recognized
Piscataway Conoy Tribe and Piscataway Indian Nation.
As you explore, consider how all of the land and waters
you see on your visit are part of the Piscataway identity
and are significant because of the people who first lived
and harvested resources here. While Europeans recorded
accounts of the local Indigenous Peoples in the 17th century,
their history spans 12,000 years. Many descendants of the
tribes remain in Charles County today and view several areas
as sacred to their heritage, such as Mallows Bay and Chapel
Point State Park.
Learn more about the re-emerging history of the Piscataway at the
Crain Memorial Welcome Center.
