One of Maryland’s First Settlements — This historic
merchant village on the banks of the Port Tobacco
River invites visitors to visualize the bustling streets of
a populous port town — the second-largest in colonial
Maryland in the mid-1700s! This land belonged to the
Potapoco and Piscataway tribes before the town’s
establishment in 1727. Historic Port Tobacco now
consists of three carefully maintained structures offering
a unique look into the life of Charles County residents at
the height of the tobacco industry.
Ongoing archeological research provides insight
into this special village, which was home to over 80
buildings, including a courthouse, church, merchant
stores, a newspaper, jeweler, shoemaker, weaver, milliner,
postmaster, carriage maker, and even a brewery.
