Freetown DAT
Kissy Junction
The Kissy Junction cable car station site and area
has the most available space, creating some exciting
opportunities for both community revitalization and
park-and-ride cable car access, all while designing a
station that can be expanded to eventually continue the
cable car route further east. This redevelopment should
build on Kissy Junction’s role as the gateway to central
Freetown from the east and create a sense of place that
helps define that area, a new “Freetown aesthetic.”
The Kissy Junction area conceptual program could
include:
40
• Community services such as a library and other
facilities.
• Other commercial services such as a hotel.
• Retaining bus maintenance and repair facilities.
• Park and ride facilities, potentially within solar
panels to shade the parking lot, provide power, and
potentially provide carbon offset credits to sell on
the international market.
• A park with community gardens and/or edible
gardens.
• The first floor of the cable car station for tickets and
retail.
• The second floor for commercial uses.
• The third floor for cable car uses, including options
for expanding the station further to the east.
• Rainwater on the roof of the station can be
captured and sent to roof cisterns on lower roofs
or underground storage at the SL Road Authority
or under the commuter parking lot, reducing
immediate flooding during the wet season and
providing a water supply as needed.
• Connections for buses and express buses.
• Improved connecting bus service by dedicating a
lane of the Bai Bureh Road for bus rapid transit
service.
• Adjacent and nearby retail, office, and housing uses,
taking advantage of all the transportation options at
this hub (cable car, bus, parking, and short distance
to the ferry). Buildings could be designed by a
variety of architects to build an interesting area and
using Sierra Leone materials (wood and rock) to the
greatest extent possible.
Kissy Junction provides the opportunity for a cable car station with connections to park and ride and bus service and a
broader community revitalization effort.
