Hillside Bypass Cable Car Station
The Hillside Bypass station is the only station on the
route that is primarily a residential area and could
thereby serve as part of a pilot study that tests the
actual ridership in a less dense section of Freetown.
Although easy access to an operating station would
immediately increase the value of land (“land rent”) in
and around the station, lower density does mean lower
revenue. Lower fare box revenue (fees for the use of
the system) and rent for first floor retail or commercial
space would almost certainly ensure that revenue at this
station would be the lowest of the four initial stations.
The Hillside Bypass conceptual program could include:
39
• The potential for a future link to Fourah Bay College.
• Small retail and bank kiosk to serve the
neighborhood, with lower rent than at other
stations.
• First floor ticketing and bus connections dropoff
points.
• Public services to serve the neighborhood (for
example a library or other community use).
While the Hillside Bypass station presents some
unique challenges (specifically its narrow width), it also
represents a unique opportunity to build the station into
the hillside and provide neighborhood services. It also
should be laid out to plan for the potential for future
links to the Fourah Bay College, unless the link from this
direction is ruled out (there are other possible links that
would negate the need for this route to the college).
The Hillside Bypass station could provide public services to the nearby neighborhood. For example, Medellín, Columbia incorporated libraries into several cable and transit stops to serve the neighborhood, and in doing so to build neighborhood
trust and connections which reduced the risk of vandalism to their stations.
