Introduction
As Bergmeyer’s Director of Corporate Social Responsibility, one of my primary goals is to make our
commitment to serving the greater public good an explicit part of our fundamental business practices. In
2022, we began by asking our entire collaborative the following question:
How can Bergmeyer create positive change in our community, our profession, and the world?
Through a series of interactive workshops and discussions that were open to everyone at Bergmeyer,
we created a statement that describes our collective commitment to creating positive change in our
community, our profession, and the world. We proudly announced the unveiling of “B the Change,” our
social responsibility mission statement.

B the Change arose from two understandings that came together in these all-office workshops.
First, our collaborative design approach is really about creating deep and meaningful connections between
people. Human engagement produces a sense of belonging. It’s at the core of our collaborative design
process. And second: When this sense of belonging – this sense of community – is present, the
potential exists to improve the quality of people’s lives . . . and to improve the world in which we live.

Looking at the world around us and understanding the opportunities that businesses like ours must
address the challenges of our age, we believe that sustainability is about more than just “green buildings”;
it’s about people. True societal sustainability includes but goes well beyond how our built projects can
reduce their environmental burdens. It includes economic prosperity and equitable access to all the
benefits of a society by everyone in the society as well.
We believe Bergmeyer can be part of creating the change we'd like to see in the world. We intend to make
this reporting an annual occurrence at Bergmeyer, a practice that will memorialize our commitment to
make "paying it forward" a standard within our collaborative.
