to feel as if I didn't need to shy away from opportunities, but instead
meet them head-on with confidence."
Caitlin was the second member of the LDP to receive colours. Caitlin's
journey to receiving her colours started when she grew frustrated with
the lack of basketball at her school, Curro. She was adamant to present
the idea of having a basketball programme at her school. So, she had a
conversation with her Principal, Mr. Cromey. He eventually approved
the programme; then Caitlin's family sourced funding to donate a hoop
to Curro in 2019. The sport was officially introduced a year later. Caitlin's
proposition created another extra-curricular activity for students at her
alma mater, job opportunities for her fellow alumnus, and an avenue
for PeacePlayers to engage their participants with Curro, a private more
affluent school.
Caitlin and Hannah have made waves of impact in each other's lives
and within their communities that will live on beyond their time as
participants. Upon receiving her colours, Caitlin was “excited and happy,
but nervous” because of the expectations that would come with having
colours. However, receiving colours made her feel confident in her skills
and what she could contribute. For both Caitlin and Hannah, these
colours were also a symbol of their growth in high school.
Caitlin is now a PP-SA Coach at Glenmore Primary School, and Hannah
is in her final year where she will matriculate at Danville High School.
They have grown with each other through high school and PeacePlayers
South Africa’s LDP programme, even serving as inspiration to fellow
LDP participants by encouraging them to also pursue their colours. They
will continue to utilise the platform PeacePlayers has provided to be
trailblazers for the next generation of leaders.
