Healing through Harmony –
Abbott House Music Program
Music has a profound ability to foster healing in children who
have experienced trauma. Thanks to a generous Legislative
Grant made possible by Assemblywoman Mary Jane
Shimsky, Abbott House has established its first-ever Music
Program and practice space on its Irvington campus. The
program is designed to help children in care find a safe
and expressive outlet for their emotions while building
confidence and improving self-esteem. Plus, it’s fun! The
program’s innovative approach ensures that each child has
an opportunity to learn at their own pace and be exposed to a
variety of instruments like chimes, ukeleles, piano, and drums.
Each child receives a recorder of their very own, so they may
continue their journey with music beyond Abbott House.
Special thanks to our team of music volunteers, especially
the Director of Performing Arts at Hackley School, Bettie-Ann
Candelora, whose expertise has helped shape an experience as
diverse as it is empowering.
