Impact of Giving
Augustus Short
Scholarships
For passionate chemistry
student Luke MacKay, the
Augustus Short Scholarship
has made the impossible
possible – giving him the
chance to attend university
and pursue his dream of
giving back to society as
a scientist.
Luke grew up in regional Victoria, and with
the support of his loving parents he was
able to excel at school and achieve the
marks necessary to go on to university.
However, without the financial support
from the Augustus Short Scholarship, Luke
wouldn’t have been able to afford to move
out of home and attend university.
“The scholarship has helped pay for my
accommodation and living expenses – it
has made a world of difference not just
in being able to study but being able to
live away from home and grow in ways
I could not have in my hometown.”
With this support, Luke is exploring his passion
for science and chemistry, and building
a foundation for a career centred around
making positive contributions to society.
“I absolutely love the exploratory nature
of chemistry. There’s so much to learn and
always new and exciting developments.”
“It’s a career with which so
much good can be done. It
provides ample opportunities
to have fun and give back to
the community.”
Augustus Short Scholarship donor Dr
Julie Bielicki says that Luke’s passion for
his studies and gratitude for the support
motivated her to donate to the program.
“Education is such a valuable asset. It
can provide pathways to a better, more
successful and fulfilling life. When I met
Luke earlier this year at the Donor Thank
You Reception he inspired me to give
to the Augustus Short Scholarships.
“Students from regional areas or those who
are financially disadvantaged are really
doing it tough. If my donation can make
a difference in helping these students, I
am more than happy to have done so.”
Luke urged potential donors to consider the
transformative impact their support could have
on the life and career of a young person.
“In your gift there is the power to transform
lives, to grow people and to bestow the gift
of education. It’s a legacy which reflects your
achievements and the care you have shown
to others. Your recipients will not forget
your generosity and you will likely inspire
them to give in the future,” Luke said.
The Augustus Short Scholarships are available to students of high
academic merit who come from rural or remote areas, challenging
financial circumstances, or experience another disadvantage.
