Impact of Giving
Cello
Teaching
Fund
Two generous University of
Adelaide alumni have built upon
their long association with the
University, by donating to the
Cello Teaching Fund and allowing
the Elder Conservatorium of
Music to appoint a worldclass cello educator.
The Honourable Thomas Gray KC and Mrs Dianne
Gray, both alumni of the University of Adelaide’s
law program, are strong supporters of the arts
and passionate about excellence in education.
Their love for classical music led them to contribute
to the Elder Conservatorium Cello Teaching Fund.
Five fellow classical music enthusiasts have also
contributed to the fund, as did many donors on Giving
Day 2023. These gifts have together enabled the
University to appoint Edith Salzmann, a distinguished
cellist and educator trained in Germany and the USA.
Ms Salzmann’s extensive experience in performing
and teaching across the world has brought a new level
of excellence to the Conservatorium. Her students
are not only excelling in their musical careers but
are also inspired by her dedication and expertise.
Since Ms Salzmann’s appointment, the Conservatorium
has seen an increase in interest from interstate
students, eager to learn from such a renowned teacher.
One of her notable achievements includes founding
and coordinating the first Adelaide Cello Weekend,
providing young cellists with invaluable opportunities
to participate in ensemble work and masterclasses.
Tom and Dianne hope that their support will continue
to attract talented students to the Conservatorium,
fostering a new generation of exceptional musicians.
Their philanthropy demonstrates the profound
difference that support for education can make,
creating opportunities for students to achieve
excellence and build successful careers.

I hope that Ms Salzmann’s Elder
Conservatorium students will
enjoy learning from her and
participating in ensemble work,
and that some of them will excel
in careers as musicians.”
