TOCQUEVILLE SOCIETY: 40 YEARS OF GENEROSITY
2021 marked the 40th anniversary of United Way of Greater Nashville’s Tocqueville
Society Alpha Chapter composed of nearly 500 generous donors.
In 1981, Dr. Thomas F. Frist, Jr. envisioned an alliance of community and
business leaders who would work collectively to address our community’s most
pressing needs. He partnered with 27 Nashville visionaries to create the Alexis de
Tocqueville Society Alpha Chapter.
Since inception, Tocqueville Society members have invested more than $10 billion
in the work of United Way worldwide and more than $160 million in Nashville. The
society now boasts 23,613 members worldwide who contribute $10,000 or more
per year to local United Ways.
United Way of Greater Nashville is honored to call itself the home of such an
illustrious group of generous donors and leaders. The unflagging support of our
members, and the trust those individuals have placed in our organization, have
been integral to our mission to create a community where every person has an
equal chance at a bright future. We are so grateful to our Tocqueville Society
founders and members, past and present.
