quickly activated the Restore
the Dream Fund to get funds
into the community where they
were needed most. After the
tornadoes, we immediately
began working with our partner
agencies, government entities
and supporting organizations
to determine the most pressing
needs and to champion a
response plan. We began
communicating with and
donating to the American Red
Cross to support immediate
relief efforts; working directly
with local agencies to find the
areas of greatest need and
providing direct assistance; and
purchasing and delivering food
and supplies to sites throughout
East and North Nashville. After
the explosion, the fund was
reactivated to help individuals
meet their basic needs and
employees who were out of work.
After the pandemic hit Nashville,
the Mayor’s Office asked United
Way to manage the COVID-19
Response Fund, chaired by
Sen. Bill Frist, to make sure
individuals and families received
assistance to meet their basic
needs during the pandemic,
including employees of local
businesses who are experiencing
lost or reduced wages. The
fund provided flexible resources
to organizations working with
individuals and communities who
are disproportionately impacted
by COVID-19 and the economic
consequences of the outbreak.
United Way administered grants
in partnership with the Response
Committee and fund partners.
Funds were released on a rolling
basis, making it possible to move
resources quickly and adapt to
evolving needs in subsequent
funding phases.
In August, the State of Tennessee
selected United Way as a
grant administrator for the TN
Community CARES Act program’s
COVID-19 relief efforts and the
City of Nashville selected United
Way as a grant administrator
for Metro Nashville’s CARES
Act funding. United Way worked
alongside community partners
to decide allocation amounts
and recipients and to monitor
spending of approved programs.
Combined, UWGN administered
the investment of $53.3 million
in state and local CARES act
funding into the community.
