We’ve chosen six pubs we think make dreamy
places to hole up and escape the inclement British
winter weather.
The Lamb in Hindon near Salisbury was 昀椀rst a pub
in the Middle Ages and still looks like it might have
done back then, though lovingly brought up to
date. Inside, you’ll be seduced by the hot toddies,
tartan textiles, comfy couches, and a list of over
100 whiskies.
The Carnarvon Arms is a grade-II-listed pub
sitting right on the Hampshire-Berkshire border.
The vaulted-ceiling dining room is the ideal place
to settle down for a mighty meal and a pint
on a wintry day or night. And if you’re inspired
to explore, Highclere Castle (of Downton
Abbey fame) is right on the doorstep.
The Grif昀椀n Inn is a 16th-century pub in the depths
of the East Sussex Countryside. In its luscious
Winter Warmer rooms, you’ll 昀椀nd four-poster
beds to snuggle up in and pass-me-the-paintbrush
picturesque views to wake up to.
The Carpenter’s Arms is a charming Kentish pub
that we’ve recently refurbished and is looking a
treat. Head Chef Connor is your man for delicious
winter fare, and the bar has all the nips of warming
somethings perfect for a nippy day.
When you stay at The Bull in Ditchling (East
Sussex), the trick is seeing if you can beat the
regulars to the spot next to the open 昀椀re –
the best (and most coveted) seat in the house.
A famed speciality here is the Sunday roast,
bestowed with a healthy portion of wonderful
winter veggies.
London pubs are equally wondrous in winter, and
the Bull’s Head in Chislehurst is a corker. A luxury
not to be missed here is the acclaimed afternoon
tea. It’s easy to beat the cold-weather blues faced
by a spectacular array of exquisite oh-go-on-then
cakes and a glass of 昀椀zz.
