LAWSPECIAL FEATUREThe alumni risingfrom the ashes.STORY BY MICHAELA MCGRATHOver the 2019-20 summer, KangarooIsland experienced an outbreak of drylightning-induced fires that scorchedalmost half of the Island, claimingcountless livestock and wildlife.Two hundred and forty kilometres away, a separatebushfire blackened 25,000 hectares of the AdelaideHills, decimating a third of its vineyards.Amid these difficult times, the University ofAdelaide community banded together to supportimpacted students, staff and alumni, replacingperished graduation certificates, and offeringthe North Terrace campus' Barr Smith Lawns asgrounds for a Fire Aid fundraising event.According to the University’s Head WinemakerAssociate Professor Paul Grbin, for the Waitecampus it was a matter of “finding a way to giveback and support the industry that has widelysupported us”.This support manifested in the Waite campusoffering wine-making facilities to those in need,along with the volunteer efforts of staff and studentsto remove burnt posts, damaged irrigation systemsand burnt vines from bushfire-affected properties.It was also involved in making small-batch wines incollaboration with the Adelaide Hills Wine RegionAssociation to help determine whether or not thegrapes were affected by smoke, and producing somesmoke-affected wines on behalf of Wine Australiato be used as a resource for training and futureresearch projects.ALUMNI MAGAZINE - SUMMER 20207
