However,it was philosophy that honed my ability tocomprehend and debate multiple sides ofsubjects that lay beyond the realm of simplescientific resolution.BA 1973Dr Richard ThomsonGraduating in 1964 in chemicalengineering I was launched intoa career with CSR Ltd that saw me work inmany countries and numerous industries,including sugar, petrochemicals, and oil andgas sectors. My employer also providedthe opportunity to gain an MSc atImperial College, London. Thereafter Iformed companies; one developing novelROVs and another providing special adviceto companies and expert witness testimoniesin the oil and gas industry. I had stintssupporting UN efforts in post-war Kuwaitand in post-Berlin-wall Poland. Realisingthat renewable energy was a majordeveloping area I moved away from fossilfuels, purchasing a solar hot water businessand developing expertise in solar thermalsystems, consulting in the field. Finally onretirement I returned to my roots at theUniversity of Adelaide and completedmy PhD in 2022 in the same School ofChemical Engineering from where itall started!
