Welcome to ourAutumn edition of LumenIn this edition we say farewell to Professor Warren Bebbington, who hasretired after 昀椀ve years as our Vice-Chancellor and President. On behalf ofthe University community, I would like to thank him for his outstandingleadership and vision, and wish him all the best for the next chapter.Iwould also like to extend myappreciation and best wishes to theoutgoing members of the University’sAlumni Council – to Dr Tim CooperAM, in particular, who has served asthe Council’s inaugural Chair sinceits inception in 2014 and to our othermembers, Mr Jim Whalley, Mr DavidWong, Mr John Hancock and Ms LouisaRose, who recently completed their termof service. My congratulations go to DrChelsea Liu and Mr Dale Manson whohave been successfully re-elected by theFaculty of the Professions, and the Waiteand Roseworthy Alumni (respectively) foranother term and to Mr Jarrad Taylor onhis first time election as alumni repetitivefor the Faculty of Sciences.In this bumper edition of Lumen we giveyou a look inside our new $246 millionAdelaide Health and Medical Sciencesbuilding – the biggest capital works projectin the University’s history, bringing ourstudents and researchers into the heartof South Australia’s Biomedical precinctin the West End.We also have features on some of ourkey strategic initiatives: defence, foodinnovation and entrepreneurship.You will meet Professor Michael Webb,our Director of Defence and Security,who is bringing together our world classresearchers’ work in partnership withdefence and industry to develop innovativetechnologies to help give our AustralianDefence Force a real edge.You will also meet Professor AndyLowe, who has a similar role in theFood Innovation area, bringing togetherhundreds of researchers across thefaculties to help make our food and wineindustries more innovative and competitive.And on our cover, you’ve seenProfessor Noel Lindsay, who’s headingup our new ThincLab Adelaide InnovationHub.
