The howCase study: Lucy WharmbyWidening ParticipationprogrammeWe’re delighted that more and more of ourtutors come from the communities we workin, with some having themselves attendedthe schools we’re now tutoring in.We’ve been working with our partneruniversities to recruit more local students, particularly those who participated in WideningParticipation programmes and who are the 昀椀rstin their families to go on to higher education.Lucy is a Quali昀椀ed Teacher, havingcompleted the Teach First LeadershipDevelopment programme between 2020and 2022. She’s currently studying fora Masters in English Literature at theUniversity of Leeds, during which she’sbeen tutoring with Tutor Trust. Havingcome from a working-class background inMans昀椀eld, and having participated in boththe Sutton Trust’s Summer School schemeand Access to Leeds before she started herundergraduate degree, Lucy is passionateabout ensuring that all young people haveopportunities to access higher education. For me, my goal is always that if“I can just help my pupils know thatShe believes it’s important that all youngpeople are aware of the many optionsavailable to them once they leave schooland believes that tutors, particularly thosewho’ve themselves participated in WideningParticipation initiatives, are especially wellplaced to inspire their tutees to think abouthigher education:they can aspire to do what they wantrather than what they think the pathis that’s laid out for them. That I’vedone it, I’ve been successful, whetherthat is university or a speci昀椀c career.I just want to make sure they knowwhat the doors are and then theycan choose the door that they wantto go through.”Excitingly, data from our internal pupilassessments is suggesting that pupils whosetutor engaged with Widening Participationprogrammes may make greater progress onaverage than other tutees. It’s early days, and we need to dig into the 昀椀ndings a littlemore, but it suggests that tutors who sharesimilar experiences with their tutees may beparticularly well-placed to act as role models.Tutor Trust Impact Report 2022/202315
