Formerly Old Mid-Whitgi昀琀ian Rugby Club
Trinity RFC were delighted to welcome
back former 1st XV captain, Ma琀琀
Higgins, who joined the club9s
coaching team over the summer. This
gave the club a huge liv and as a result
the club had a great pre-season which
included a combined training session
with Trinity School.
It was therefore no surprise
when the 1st XV started
their league campaign, in
Surrey & Sussex Coun}es 1,
with victory away at Old
Walcoun}ans. The 昀椀rst half
of the season saw further
victories against
Eastbourne, Hove, Old
Cranleighans and Kingston
which lev Trinity 1st XV
with more points at the half way point
than they achieved in the whole of the
previous season! A clear sign of the
progression they have made as the
further enhance their posi}on as the
highest placed team in the local area!
If it had not been for a number of
injuries to key players this points total
would have been even higher!
The downside to the 昀椀rst half of the
season was the lack of AXV games
which seemed to be a concern for
most clubs. It is therefore great to
have a close rela}onship with Old
Caterhamians which enabled AXV
players from both clubs to be given
opportuni}es to play for one another
when either side was short of players.
With some mid season recruitment
and a number of players due back
from injury the club is hopeful of being
able to ful昀椀l AXV 昀椀xtures going
forward, star}ng with a rearranged
league game at home to Old
Whitgivian on Saturday 6th January.
One of the highlights of the season
was the very last game of the year
which saw the club 昀椀eld an U22 team
for the 昀椀rst }me! Special men}on
should therefore go to both Mark
Macaskill and Phil Mamode who set
up this side which consisted of a
number of new players including some
from the recent Trinity School Na}onal
Cup winning side. A 33-14 victory
against Chipstead set up the U22s for a
great chance to make their 昀椀nal with
their next group game to follow at
Easter against London Welsh.
On the subject of youth and the future
of the club, The Titans have con}nued
with their rapid expansion and we now
have over 100 registered juniors!
These range from U5 up to U16 and it
is great to see the club so ac}ve on a
Sunday morning. Highlights from the
1st XV vs Eastbourne - 07/10/2023. Won 26 - 19
