The Brokerage The Overlooked Advantage - Flipbook - Page 14
The acknowledgement of strengths rooted in experience of disadvantage is, therefore, not an
invitation to freely capitalise on the skills and mindsets that these experiences can help advance.
Nor is this report intended to be a ‘business case’, justifying why underrepresented young people
should be employed as a way of improving the bottom line. Instead, it’s an opportunity for
employers to become aware of how challenging circumstances can become a source of strengths
and reframe how less-advantaged young people are viewed by others in the organisation.
Specifically, employers can help their managers contextualise young people’s skills during
assessment and selection, and foster an environment where young people feel comfortable to
share the full range of their relevant experience. The next chapter describes these and other steps
employers need to take to create a more inclusive recruitment process.
