It is underpinned by a transition to renewable energy
and materials, and based on the principles of
eliminating waste and pollution by reducing natural
resource consumption and keeping products and
materials in use, rather than disposing of them, for
as long as possible.
This approach is championed by the Ellen MacArthur
Foundation, which believes that the circular economy
is critical to achieving net zero, and could reduce
CO2 emissions by nearly 10 billion tonnes (or 20 % of
global emissions).1
