WelcomeWelcomefrom our Chair of Trustees and Chief ExecutiveOur goal is simply to make the best care possiblefor King’s patients. Uniting clinical staff and donors,we fund innovative research, capital projects andinitiatives that enhance patient experience andoutcomes. Our strategic objectives to recruit new regular donors, foster key partnerships and build the King’s Lotteryhas paid dividends. We are delighted to report thatour income this year was an impressive £4.7M. A 26%increase on the previous year, it is also the highestincome we have ever achieved, placing us in a strongposition to deliver the best care where it is mostneeded. In summer 2023, our first Strategic Crown Fundprovided £300K for large-scale projects to improveoutcomes for patients who are particularly frail orvulnerable. One such diverse group is patients with sickle celldisease, who face not only frailty and reducedlife expectancy but also significant barriers toemployment. We are proud to fund a key researchproject that works with patients to improve accessto existing care pathways and develop new ways ofproviding support. By fostering better communicationamong care providers, we aim to overcome andincrease awareness of the unique challenges facingthese patients (P17).We are pleased to report how funding raised byCharity supporters in previous years has begun tomake a difference. The final phase of the new criticalcare centre is now complete and, since January 2024,all four units have been fully open to patients. Madepossible by our contribution of almost £1M, thanksto the generosity of our donors, this funding not onlyenhances how patients experience critical care butalso enables staff to deliver better care and treatmentfor some of King’s most vulnerable patients (P11).The transformation of the Majors area in theEmergency Department at Denmark Hill deliveredan immediate impact. We worked quickly to enhanceits environment and capacity, improving patients’experience of this essential area (P11).We also found ways to reduce the worry and isolationthat can arise in hospital. Our brilliant volunteers spenttens of thousands of hours helping to put patients atease and our new Welcome to King’s Guidebook is anexcellent tool to help alleviate anxiety that inpatientsmight have (P10).We have worked hard to enhance the hospitalenvironment, working closely with stakeholders, donors and contractors to improve facilities (P10,11). We were especially proud to work in partnershipwith three families who all had first-hand experienceof caring for a sick child in hospital. Thanks to thebrilliant fundraising efforts of the Betts, Dove andRice families, the full refurbishment of three parentrooms across King’s College Hospital is now complete, transforming facilities for parents just like them(P12–13).Working collaboratively is fundamental to our strategyand a good example of this is our relationship withthe world-renowned MowatLabs, a research facilityfunded entirely by charitable donations. By unitingvisionary philanthropists with leading clinical experts, like Professor Anil Dhawan, we can support them intheir common purpose to transform treatment andcare for King’s liver patients (P18–19).The Emergency Department teams from King’sCollege Hospital and the PRUH won the ChiefExecutive’s Award at the 2023 King’s Stars Awards.4S U P P O R T K I N G S .O R G .U K
