The water ski club came to St Ives in 1988 and
leased the lake at Kings Hall, off Harrison Way,
from ARC. The lake itself was dug out in the 1940s.
By the turn of the Millennium the St Ives club had
20 boats and up to 100 members, around 60 of
whom are active skiers coming from as far away
as Kent. The club competes in the British Water Ski
League and until recently hosted Eastern Region
water-ski championships.
Merlyn Jones and his wife Lorraine, who both
started water ski-ing 20 years ago, run the club
through a committee. Merlyn was born in
Godmanchester, Lorraine in Colne, and they lived in
St Ives for 20 years before moving with their two
daughters to Needingworth in 2001. Water ski-ing
is a hobby for the whole family - daughter Chloe
started at two-and-a-half years old and Abigail at
three.
