Ian was elected the town’s new Mayor in 2002.
He had fond boyhood memories of St Ives and its
outstanding riverscape and meadowland from
boating holidays on the Great Ouse, and couldn’t
believe his luck when a job move gave him and
wife Jan a chance to settle their young family here.
As a parent governor of Thorndown School his
interest in local affairs grew. He joined the
Conservative Association and was elected to the
Town Council the following year, in 1996.
Membership of the congregation of All Saints
Parish Church is also an important part of his life,
and other interests include bird watching, wetlands
restoration and rugby. He works as a corporate
risk manager.
Pictured here on Hemingford Meadow, Ian said he
felt that being Mayor was an unrivalled and highly
privileged position from which to help strengthen
the community life of St Ives. ‘The challenge is
surely to promote continuing prosperity and
progress while at the same time safeguarding the
essential character of our town.’
