Nero’s busy hairdressing salon is tucked away in Quay
Court and employs seven staff. Maria, the owner and
manager, has lived in St Ives since her early teens, and
trained in Huntingdon before setting up her own
business 10 years ago.

The smooth running of the town is the task of Town Clerk Ray Jenkins, seen here flanked by his
staff (left to right) Sue Rawlinson, Jayne Westlake and Kay Mitcham.
Ray grew up in Cornwall and in his early days was a professional musician playing guitar in
dance bands and studios and touring with various artistes in the UK and abroad. After a spell in
the RAF he moved into local government working in Cambridge, London and Harlow where he
retired as joint Head of Finance. He stepped into the St Ives job in 2000.
Ray holds a pilot licence and part-owns an aircraft, and still plays in a Celtic Folk Band.
Sue, a Liverpudlian, is the Mayor’s secretary so gets a new boss every year. She organises civic
events and provides administrative support for the Norris Museum and Corn Exchange
committees and the Youth Town Council. Sue used to work, over the Internet, for an American
magazine. Her passions are astronomy, her two cats and new husband Tom, though not
necessarily in that order.
Jayne is the Town Clerk’s assistant. She used to be a dedicated squash player but nowadays is
more interested in literature, music and the history of art. She also plays the piano.
Kay takes care of the accounts and worked for an electronics company before joining the Town
Council in 1989. With a busy family life she has little time for hobbies and regards the occasional
good book as a luxury.
