MISBOURNE MATINS
ROTARY CLUB IT CHALLENGE,
CHILTERN HILLS
A record-breaking ten local primary
schools, located near our head office in
Chalfont St Peter, entered the Challenge
this year. The task, open to children in
years 3, 4, 5 and 6, was to create a poster
using words and graphics communicating
a message on the theme of ‘Being Kind’.
The Challenge generated more than 800
entries which gave the judges plenty of
work to do. Sponsored by RWS and by the
Chiltern Open Air Museum which hosted
the prize-giving ceremony, the event was
attended by over 60 winning children,
parents and schoolteachers.
Parents and teachers complimented the
beautiful surroundings at the museum, the
positivity of the ceremony, and how much
the children enjoyed it.
The judges, including RWS Amber Griffiths,
commented that the entries showed
a high standard of original thinking
and awareness, communicated in a
sophisticated way for their age groups,
alongside solid IT skills.
Congratulations to the prize-winners,
all the children who took part, and their
teachers who facilitated their entries.
The schools taking part were:
Robertswood, St Mary’s, Thorpe House,
Chalfont St Giles Village School, Davenies,
St Joseph’s, Gayhurst, Maltman’s Green,
Chalfont St Peter Academy and High
March.
TUTORMATE
In FY22, 20 colleagues from across the
UK got involved in assisting Year 1 or Year
2 (aged 5 to 7) pupils attending a school
that serves a disadvantaged community in
England. Teachers selected readers who
were struggling and needed extra help.
The reading programme involved 30
minute one-to-one weekly online sessions.
RWS supported 26 children with 189 hours
of reading support resulting in the average
child progress of 3.2 reading levels.
Teachers report that students who have
regular, consistent reading sessions
develop strong vocabularies and exhibit
improved reading confidence, fluency, and
oracy skills. Similarly, tutors find it highly
rewarding to experience the growth in
their students’ abilities during the school
year.
