RWS SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMME WITH
THE UNIVERSITY OF MANCHESTER
As a large employer of language graduates, we believe
we have a role to play in encouraging the next generation
to consider a degree in languages and support those
who may not have the financial means to complete their
studies.
In 2019 we launched the 'RWS-Brode Scholarship
Programme' – named after our Chairman, Andrew Brode
– in collaboration with the University of Manchester, to
encourage students to complete a degree in modern
languages. We are very pleased that the programme is
currently supporting 50 undergraduate students who
joined the university between 2019 and 2021.
In addition to the scholarship programme, we have a
planned programme of events with the University of
Manchester to support students in their education and
path into the workplace. We were also very happy to be
able to offer a placement to Ruby Mercer, a second-year
BA (Hons) French and Spanish student, in our Sheffield
office, to provide further insight and training opportunities
to complement her degree.

BA (Hons) Spanish and Portuguese, Year 1
BA (Hons) German and Japanese, Year 1
I have just completed my first year of Spanish and
Portuguese at The University of Manchester, and I can
already see that my knowledge of both languages and
cultures has greatly improved. With Portuguese, it was
my first time in eight years learning a new language
so I had a lot of challenges to overcome, but I’ve also
learnt important lessons that I can reapply in other
situations and in new languages. I also enjoyed my
‘Spanish Linguistics’ module as it gave me a deeper
understanding of how the language is formed and a
chance to study the syntax and morphology for the first
time.
Thanks to the financial help from my scholarship, this
summer I was able to visit Spain and Portugal. During
this trip my love for languages and cultural studies
has only flourished. Being able to speak the language
with locals, and to visit galleries and museums to see
artworks and artifacts in real life which we have studied
in university, has been an incredible experience and one
which I will remember and value for years to come.
The RWS-Brode Scholarship has opened up
incredible opportunities for me and I am
extremely grateful for this support.
I look forward to continuing my
studies, and hopefully to working
with RWS in the future.

My first year exceeded expectations, and I’ve loved
every second of it. It was very interesting to learn the
German language more deeply, and I also spent some
time in the first semester tutoring other students in
German through the Language Society. I hope to do this
again next year, so I can get more experience teaching
languages. I have also applied to be a Peer Mentor for
the Japanese Studies programme, to help first year
students transition into university the best they can.
Thanks to my scholarship, I was able to visit Germany
over Easter and Spain in July. These two trips let me
practice my language skills in the real world, interact with
locals and have a better understanding of what I was
visiting. The funding also helped me to purchase items to
enhance my knowledge and skills in my target languages
– such as textbooks not only in German and Japanese,
but also in Spanish and Arabic. This scholarship has been
extremely helpful, and I cannot convey in words how
grateful I am for what you have given me. Thank you very
much.
