RWS and its colleagues are committed to helping prevent
the impact of global climate change by transitioning to
carbon net zero.
In 2022, we signed up to the United Nation’s Race to Zero
and officially committed to set science-based targets to
be carbon net zero through the Science Based Targets
initiative (SBTi). Initially we are aiming to reduce carbon
emissions by 55% by 2030 using FY22 as a baseline. To
achieve these challenging goals, we began developing a
carbon emission reduction plan in 2021. This included the
very important step of expanding our Scope 3 indirect
carbon scope. FY22 provided an opportune moment to
reestablish our baseline year as operations were returning
to normal following the Covid-19 pandemic and, since
acquiring SDL plc in November 2020, had integrated SDL
into RWS adding 60 offices and over 4,300 colleagues.
In 2021, we became a signatory to the Task Force on
Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) and have
adopted its framework.
We are committed to reviewing and improving the
environmental aspects and impacts of our operations
by preventing pollution, protecting the environment
and enhancing positive impacts wherever we can. These
actions improve the environment as well as RWS being
an attractive place to work which supports the mitigation
strategy of one of our key risks, namely attracting and
retaining good quality people.
To demonstrate how important climate change and
the environment is to RWS, the CEO retains overall
responsibility for all relevant climate-related and
environmental matters. The CFO, supported by the Head
of Sustainability and ESG, is responsible for managing
climate-related and environmental risks across the Group.
Both the CEO and CFO sit on the RWS Board and climaterelated and environmental issues are presented and
considered by the Board at least bi-annually.
We measure and monitor our principal environmental
impacts and have set objectives and targets for their
reduction.
To date we have been targeting reductions year-on-year
for the following:
•
•
•
•
•
•
Natural resources and consumables
We have ISO 14001:2015 Environmental Management
certification at our head office in Chalfont St Peter, our
Maidenhead office and our Chinese offices in Beijing,
Rizhao and Xi’an. Our Environmental Management
System certifications collectively cover 31% of our offices
by headcount and we will continue to increase this
compliance aiming to achieve 100% compliance by 2030.
During FY22 we have achieved the following:
•
Assessed, prioritised and started working on the
mitigation of climate change risks in alignment with
the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures
(TCFD) (see pages 68 to 78)

Held environmental awareness programmes to promote
initiatives and actively encourage colleagues to get
involved globally. These included National Recycling
